Call for Submissions

The International Conference on Sustainable Infrastructure (ICSI) 2021 will provide an environment to present, discuss, and leverage current insights in the planning and development of resilient and sustainable communities globally. Conference content will promote collaboration with a wide diversity of stakeholders that are impacted by global infrastructure challenges and opportunities associated with creating sustainable and resilient communities.

To effectively leverage professional insights and to encourage enduring community engagement, the virtual conference will feature a variety of formats including keynote addresses, panel discussions, curated presentation sessions, an examination of hot topics, and poster presentations. Proposals for other learning formats such as virtual demonstrations, technical tours, and student engagement are also encouraged.

The public is invited to submit information outlining proposed conference content and how they believe it will benefit society and the overall mission of creating sustainable and resilient communities.

Relevant themes and topics

The conference is open to a broad range of relevant topics and speakers focused on leveraging technology, lessons learned, innovation, and social capital to create the infrastructure of sustainable and resilient communities. The program committee welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with the ASCE membership and infrastructure stakeholders around the globe. The conference dialogue will ideally include inter-sectional impact with many of the following themes:

  • Community Resiliency in the Face of Climate Change
  • Disaster Mitigation and Recovery
  • Disruptive Innovations
  • Education, Workforce Diversity, and Outreach
  • Energy Supplies and Distribution
  • Equity and Social Justice
  • Infrastructure Financing and Management
  • Public Health and Recovery from Pandemics
  • Public Policy
  • Social Impact and Stakeholder Engagement
  • Supply Chain
  • Sustainable Technologies, Materials, and Designs
  • Urbanization

Submission types

The program committee encourages program content in a variety of formats, including::

  • Individual presentation (10-15 minutes)
  • Panel (4-5 speakers and a moderator to discuss a topic: 90 minutes)
  • Full session (4-5 individual presentations and moderator: 90 minutes)
  • Hot Topic (30-minute talk with a 15-minute Q&A)
  • Poster (.PDF or other format to be determined; available on conference platform 24 hours)
  • Other Activity or Format

Submissions are limited to 250 words. Content to be presented must not be autobiographical, must not be previously published, and must not be commercial or promotional. A $25 one-time, non-refundable, submission fee is required and allows for the submittal up to two proposals. Students will NOT be required to pay the submission fee (students may contact ASCE staff for information at [email protected]).

ASCE membership is encouraged, but not required for submission. Individuals making submissions that are accepted for inclusion are required to register for and attend the virtual ICSI Conference December 6–10, 2021. All expenses associated with making a submittal and delivering the content are the responsibility of the individual(s) presenting a submission. All attendees are required to pay the conference registration fees; however, the submission fee will be applied toward the registration cost. ASCE does not reimburse or pay the presenter's costs to attend the conference.

ICSI 2021 Publication Options

If a submission is accepted for inclusion in the ICSI 2021 program, all submitters will be required to provide a brief or extended abstract and will have the option to provide a full paper. Extended abstracts will not be peer-reviewed and will be available on the conference website. All full papers will go through a rigorous peer-review process. A select group of papers will be published as a special collection in the ASCE Library post-conference. (It is not guaranteed that all papers submitted will be selected for publishing.)  If a submission is accepted for the ICSI 2021 but not allotted space during the program, the submitter will be invited to participate as a poster presenter.

Descriptions of publication types

Extended Abstract: If a submission is accepted for the ICSI 2021 program, an abstract or extended abstract will be required. Extended abstracts can be up to 3 pages in length and include references and figures or graphs. Extended abstracts will not be peer reviewed but will be provided to conference attendees as submitted. Abstracts will continue to be available post-conference on the conference website. 

Paper: If a submission is accepted for the ICSI 2021 program, submitters may provide a paper for publication. A select group of papers will be peer reviewed and published in a special collection. This special collection of papers will be published in the ASCE Library post-conference and available beginning mid-January 2022 for purchase (not included in the registration price). Not all papers submitted for the conference will be accepted into this special collection.

  • For those intending to submit a paper for the conference, the allowable file type for papers is MS Word. PDFs are not allowed. All papers should be in accordance with ASCE’s paper formatting guidelines.
  • Papers may not exceed 12 pages.

Posters: If a submission is accepted for the ICSI 2021 but not allotted space during the program, the submitter will be invited to participate as a poster presenter. There will be a poster session during ICSI 2021, however, posters will be available to conference attendees 24 hours a day during December 6–10, 2021. Poster format requirements will be sent at a later time.
