ASCE, in fact, was founded in 1852 in New York City, as the American Society of Civil Engineers and Architects; the name changed in 1868. The founding meeting took place at the Croton Reservoir in Manhattan at the Office of the Chief Engineer of the municipal agency assuring safe, potable water for the growing city.
